Jeanette, Chapter 27

A Birthday Surprise

When I got to work the next morning, Caitlyn came to talk to me right away. We spent a bit apologizing to each other, ensuring each other that apologies weren’t necessary, then apologizing for the earlier apology. It went on like that for an hour, at which point the robot’s clock must have kicked in, and it interrupted us with a cheerfully beeped “HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEANETTE.”

My what now?

OHMIGOSH

How did I forget my birthday?

“How did you forget your birthday?” Caitlyn asked.  I couldn’t explain it.

“Stuff!  I was busy and … things.”

“That’s okay!” she smiled. “I booked us seats at Chez Llama, we head over after work.”

But when we got there, all they had was two separate tables, for five of us.  I was surprised to see Kimberly and Sergio, but they both gave their birthday wishes, and I think we were all going to be fine.  Skylar arrived as well, and it was great to see her looking so good after childbirth.  Which must have happened…. yesterday?

It was weird to have Caitlyn sitting alone, but she assured me she was fine.

“I get to talk to you every day at work,” she reminded me.  “This is time to hang out with your friends!”

I guess.  She was close enough to carry on conversation, so it worked out.

After dinner, and several glasses of wine, the waitress brought out the cake.  I silently wished Aiden could have made it, and blew out the candles.

Apparently Skylar can play the trumpet. Where was she keeping that?

The waitress came by with a steaming hot tray of more wine.

The cake was amazing, the wine great, and the friends fantastic.  It was a wonderful night out, I couldn’t thank Caitlyn enough for organizing it.

Sergio even stuck around long enough to help pay for dinner, even though Caitlyn argued that she had it.  We said our good nights, and they all wished me the best for the next year.

Late into the night, I trundled home.  Next year?  Good grief.  So this is 30, eh?  All adult, apparently.

Time to get on with life, I suppose.

Jeanette, Chapter 24

Well Hello There

The next couple of days passed without aliens, jerks, or clam chowder.  It was uneventful and boring, if you ask me.  Maxwell wasn’t communicating with the microwave when I came into work Friday morning, but the microwave seemed happier than usual, beeping cheerfully away.  I frowned at it, but it didn’t seem to care.

I spent most of Saturday morning sleeping in, followed by some serious coffee-fueled computer gaming. Once the afternoon began to turn towards evening, I needed to head out, maybe see some friends and get some dancing in.

But first – of course – wine.

A good group of folk began arriving, but I knew better than to leave a nice glass of wine lonely.

The DJ was fantastic tonight. None of my usual friends showed up, but I had a good time with those who were here. I headed back to the bar for another drink, to find that there’d been a shift change during my workout on the dance floor.  And that’s when I met….

Aiden.

Sigh.  Oh… Aiden.

Aiden Stone is a smart and funny man.  We spoke and joked for about an hour, and got to know each other well.  Just then Sergio’s roommate (or brother? I never figured that out) Joaquin suggested a trip out to the Ruins, as he’d heard there was a huge party going down.

Of course there was. Didn’t this happen last week?  I should just start off at the ruins and save myself the time and cab fare.  But then I wouldn’t have met… oh.

I was torn.  Aiden had just started his shift, so he couldn’t leave. But I really wanted to dance, and there were other … “customers” or whatever demanding Aiden’s attention (the nerve of them!).  We traded phone numbers, I promised to call him, and I somewhat reluctantly headed out with the gang.

I’m glad I did. I’ll call Aiden, but I really needed to get out and jump with my friends.  Caitlyn was at the Ruins, and was I happy to see her.

I hadn’t noticed at first, but Sergio had come down as well. I think he was trying to get my attention, but I spent the night completely ignor…. I spent the night pretending to completely ignore him, while ensuring that he knew that I was doing so.  I’m certain it worked.

I’m having fun and you’re not involved, you jerk.

He went all “grr”-like at one point, but Caitlyn threatened him with a carefully raised eyebrow.

He eventually gave up.

Most of the original group had given up by that time as well. Caitrin was getting a second wind after a nap, and her friend Carla came down to join us.  Carla seemed like a good sort, and we got along well right away. I think she needed to get out for a fun night.

There was suddenly a strange light off on the horizon. Were the aliens coming out to dance? That would be fantas… oh, it’s the dawn.  We’d been up all night.

Sergio, Out!

After an uneventful, alien-less day at work, I received a call from Sergio, asking me out to dinner at the Pelican. “Fine,” I thought.  Maybe I should just give in and start dating this twerp.  He *was* the first person who’d talked to me when I arrived here, but he’s just so … so… Sergio.

Anyway, it’s a nice evening out.

I got in line to book a table, and the place started filling up.

I mean, it’s like everyone arrived at the restaurant at exactly the same time.  Odd.

Anyway, we ordered and had a good chat.  Maybe, Serge isn’t such a twerp after all.

I was telling Sergio about my day at the lab, explaining a little bit about my latest experiments, when he stood up suddenly.

“Uh… just a sec Jeanette, I just…”

“I mean, I um… I need to…”

“Now where’s my … it’s just…”

He left the restaurant, and just kept going. I could still hear him mumbling as he walked away.

Fricken’ jerk. You’re dead to me, Serge.

I paid the bill (thanks Sergio!), and went home to bed.

THings Can Only Get Better

11-10-16_3-03-29-pm Tuesday morning, in my new kitchen!  I couldn’t be happ… well, yeah I could happier, but it’s still fantastic. The stove is a used piece of junk, but it works. The fridge smells like old cheese and dead raccoons, but … well, it’s colder than outside.  I was sure enjoying dining out, so this whole “cooking my own food” thing will take some getting used to.  But, I did always love mom’s grilled cheese, so…

11-10-16_3-05-04-pmOh, how I wish this was mom’s grilled cheese.  I hope I get better at this.

Well, Tuesday.  Work was really really boring today; all the usual experiments, analysis, collecting samples, etc.  The only thing that alleviated the monotony was a request for the creation and testing of an another anger-inducing serum. The creation was fairly routine, but I still needed to test it, on either myself – which would be a fair method, or on someone … Oh hey, Meagan.

11-10-16_3-10-18-pm No no… It’s a perfectly safe artificial food supplement.  The boss said to test it.

11-10-16_3-10-26-pmTee hee.

11-10-16_3-20-56-pmWell, it worked perfectly.   Meagan spent the remainder of the day mad as hell, and couldn’t really figure out why.  And she broke another computer.

I, on the other hand, was given another raise and title, and ended the day just a little less broke.  When I got home, there was another delivery truck from the lab waiting for me.  The lab had sent over my own chem lab!  Good thing I can’t afford furniture yet, so I know just where to put it.

11-10-16_3-33-43-pmI can’t decide if they like the work I’m doing so well, and they think I enjoy it so much, that I should have one to play with, or they think I *really* need to practice more.  Either way…. Fun With Chemicals!

11-10-16_3-35-00-pmThe raise also allowed me to purchase a small POS computer, which should really help with my gaming.  WORK.  With my work, and studying and whatever.  Yeah.  But, then I got a call from my old friend Serge, talking all excited about a fantastic dance party going on.  I calmed him down, and we headed out.

11-10-16_3-39-25-pmYour clothing choices never fail to impress, Serge.  Did you forget socks, or are you delib… ah.  Okay.  Will Tubbs be along soon to help solve crimes? Ah… but let’s face it, I’m not interested in you for your fashion sense.

11-10-16_3-41-53-pm Jumpin’!  Caitlyn and Kimberley were there already, and we danced like mad.

11-10-16_3-41-59-pmIt was a good time with friends and … wait, where’d Sergio end up?

11-10-16_3-42-39-pmOh f’r heaven’s sake, Serge! That’s a blow to the little ego. Should I remind you that you invited *me* out to dance?

11-10-16_3-42-27-pmSeriously, dude.  Wake up and dance with me!

11-10-16_3-47-01-pmGod, it took him forever, but we danced.  He’s actually a really good dancer, but by the time his moves showed up, it was after 2 in the morning.

11-10-16_3-49-05-pm I thanked him for a night out; I needed it.  Tired and reluctant, I headed home.

11-10-16_3-49-32-pmI think he was a little stunned at my departure.  Next time, don’t fall asleep on the bench, Serge.

11-10-16_3-53-25-pmDinner was another quick grilled cheese, and this one was far better than my first. Mom would be proud.

11-10-16_3-56-15-pm You know… just before bed, let’s see if this …

11-10-16_3-56-27-pmEh… whatever.  It’s a place to sleep.

Jeanette, Chapter 2

The Second First Day

I did manage to get some sleep, and woke up bright and *very* early the next morning, eager to start my new job.

004An early morning run…

11-01-16_2-16-06-pmFollowed by a shower – I think I broke it.

006-look-whos-hereI arrived at FutureSim Labs, and was greated by Caitlyn Paynter, who showed me around the place.

It’s a great laboratory, with the most modern – and some of the friendliest – equipment. My first day was spent learning the ropes, experimenting and introducing myself to the team of scientists. I built an interesting momentum dealybob, and learned how to make a meal-replacement serum from basil leaves and bluebell flowers.

007Hanging with the coworkers, Summer Holiday and Caitlyn Paynter.
(ed. It was cool to see Caitlyn here at the lab. She was my earlier Scientist sim, who I’d injected into this game as a townie.  -hnef)

008Time for some much-needed coffee, and a sandwich. My energy was waning, but this will keep me going until the end of the day.

009-promotionHome! After a great day of hard work, along with two startling breakthroughs at the lab, they promoted me to Apprentice Inventor.

11-01-16_12-57-08-pmI think it’s time for a nice meal to celebrate.

(ed. Sitting off to Jeanette’s left is Cassandra Goth and her daughter, from another earlier game. I had saved the household files, but lost the save game files.  -hnef)

11-01-16_11-31-55-amAfter dinner, I walked over to the library for some research and socialisation. And maybe some more chess. Caitlyn was here for a while too, but took off after an hour or so.

11-01-16_11-37-53-amThe library seems to be a great place to meet people. Eventually though, it was getting dark. Time to head back to the spa to see if I can get some sleep.

11-01-16_2-06-09-pmMy second home, apparently.  But that’s when I met …

11-01-16_2-08-11-pmThis guy.  Said his name was Sergio Romeo.  Of course it is.  I tried lying down to sleep, but he pushed me aside, turned on the tv, and started talking.  AND started talking.  WHILE watching tv.

11-01-16_2-08-18-pmSeriously dude, I’m just trying to …

11-01-16_2-08-24-pmSerge… come on man…

11-01-16_2-08-33-pm

I turned the tv off, but he turned it back on.  Maybe I’ll try the other couch again.  Serge is confused by my lack of interest.

11-01-16_2-08-37-pm11-01-16_2-08-54-pmI think old Serge is finally getting the idea.

11-01-16_2-09-06-pmAhh.  Thank you.  It’s almost midnight, and I have to go to work in the morning.  I’m really hoping that coffee does it’s job tomorrow too.
