Jeanette, Chapter 32

Oowatanite!

AAAHHHH! Okay, so he might be shy, but holy cats he rocked the room. Although we’re still on very different time schedules, last night we were absolutely in sync.

Three or four times.

Just before I fell asleep in a glorious haze of after-sync, Aiden asked to use my computer.  I don’t remember answering him, but I would have given in to anything right then. The next thing I knew, the sun was shining. It was just after 7 already.

Aiden pointed out that I was singing while making french toast. I denied it, but couldn’t stop smiling.

He told me the french toast was beautiful, and I looked delicious. Or something. I told him that he was delicious too.

He made some suggestions as to what to do after breakfast. We returned to the bedroom to follow up on some of those.

However, before long it was about noon, and Aiden had to leave, to take care of some things at the bar before the evening crowd. I reluctantly kissed him goodbye; he said he’d call me later.

I was puttering about when Caitlyn called.

“There’s a flea market going on in the downtown market. You want to go hit it up?” I hadn’t been to a flea market in years, and hanging out with her is always fun.

“Sure!” I couldn’t wait to tell her about last night!

“OHMIGOD!” She high-fived me. “Tell me all about it!”

I wasn’t subtle. She’s my best friend! I told her everything as we wandered through the market. There seemed to be a lot of lamps, but some funky furniture was out for sale as well.  It was after 2 by then, so I grabbed some pho for lunch.

I’m getting much better with the chopsticks, but I wasn’t quite prepared for…

… the spice!  Gah!  It was yummy, but wow it was hot.

Caitlyn pointed out the basketball court nearby, and “challenged” me to some throws.  Balls?  Basket drops?  We sportsed for a bit.

Of course she’s way better than I, and in way better shape. I think she was just trying to get me out exercising a little more than my 6 or 7 days a week of nothing.

I’m sure I totally would have won though, if Trisha hadn’t taken that exact 10 or 15 minutes to walk out on the court and talk to me.

“Have you tried this soup? It’s really hot, isn’t it?”

We spent hours at the market, checking out the stalls, laughing and hanging out and failing at basketball. When the sun began dropping behind the mountains, I invited Caitlyn out to dinner. I was hungry.

She might be right about this exercise stuff.

Naturally, we headed over to the Chowder House.

Caitlyn disappeared to the washroom, and came back with a complete change of clothing.  We’ve been out since lunch time, and this is her third outfit. She didn’t see anything weird about it.

Anyway, we ordered a couple of glasses of wine and some dinner, but before the wine ever arrived at the table, my phone rang.

It was Aiden, asking me out on a date.

“Go!  Go, for heaven’s sake!” Caitlyn laughed and made shooing motions. “I’ll pick this up and take it home.” I thanked her multiple times, and I’m certain she may have heard some of them as I ran out.

I met Aiden down at the old ruins. I spotted a bonfire near the centre, but there didn’t appear to be anyone there. It certainly wasn’t the dance party I was used to down here.

The fire was mesmerizing. It was deserted, and romantic.  And since we were all alone out in the vacant ruins …

We set fire to each other again, and nearly this bush.

The stars were out, the moon high, and I knew I had to call it an evening. It was nearly 2am again, and since it was Monday already, I had to get some sleep.

I had to get some food too, since Caitlyn had the dinner I’d ordered.

I made a quick sandwich with leftover french toast (I’d left it out this morning. I was distracted.) and some … ham? I think? I fell into bed.

Jeanette, Chapter 31

Let’s Get It On

I woke quite late the next morning, feeling refreshed and relaxed. I’d decided I was just going to spend the day puttering about the house; maybe go for a nice walk if the weather’s good.

Man, I felt good this morning!

I got dressed, thinking I’d head out  somewhere, when I got a phone call.

Aiden!  Spa day!  Other words that were said but I really can’t recall anything other than that, and “Yes!”.

He greeted me warmly when I arrived. Hrm. He smelled nice.

“Ready for a relaxing day?” he asked.

“Absolutely!” I said. “I love this place. It … feels like home sometimes.”

I’m sure I’ll tell him about that.  Someday.

Ooooh dear, this felt so good.  While I get me some of that hot pore-cleansing, Aiden offered to help take some tension off my shoulders.

I wasn’t going to tell him that I didn’t have any. Just keep with the hands on me.  More hands on skin, Aiden!

I offered to return the favour.

It would have been irresponsible of me to enact a sudden shortage of towels, so I kept my hands above his armpits.

For now.

We followed the sauna up with a quick dip in the pool.

Although I’ll have to work on that too. Who wears a tank top into the swimming pool?  Jeez, guy.  Well, perhaps he’s as shy as I thought he was.

Tank top or no, he’s just too damn cute.

He let me know he’d also booked a real massage for me. Cute and sweet. I’m certain I’m in love.

Jimmy here – or Jumpy or whatever –  welcomed me in and asked me to lay on the table.

Oooohh.  I warned him that I thought I was pretty relaxed already, but figured it couldn’t hurt.

Augh! Maybe I wasn’t as relaxed as I thought; Jamie found a few places that needed some kneading. He wasn’t exactly gentle, but I could feel my back loosening further with every …

Urk!

As we were leaving the spa, I took Aiden’s arm and asked him what the next stop on our relaxing day would be. He let me know that the “Romance Festival” was in town, and he’d booked us a pair of tickets.  We arrived at the market and was instantly showered with rose petals.  I think Aiden might be allergic.

Everyone was in a really great mood. A large tea fountain provided us with a rather warming drink. I’m not certain there wasn’t alcohol in it, but it induced a certain amorous intoxication that I could get used to.

Actually… it tasked a little of roses.  Like … like the Rose Serum we make at the lab!  Part of me wondered if I should investigate a leak, or report a theft, but the other part of me was feeling amazing and told that first part to shut the hell up and jump Aiden’s skinny bones.

And the rose petals are just so damned pretty.

Of course, nothing goes together with a rose love potion than a few pints.

I finally had the nerve to ask my glass if I had the nerve.

“Of course you do, you’re wonderful,” the beer told me.

“And sexy,” added the love tea.

Right! Well who am I to argue with talking intoxicants?

Aiden couldn’t come up with a convincing argument either.  When I suggested that we head over to my house for the remainder of the evening, he agreed without his usual hesitation.  I think the tea made his voice an octave lower.  And huskier.

Back at my place, we sat and talked for nearly two hours. We shared and debated hopes and dreams, neighbourhood tax rates, llama breeding, everything.

We learned an awful lot more about each other. Specifically, we both really wanted …

… to do more of this.

A lot more. It coulda been the Marvin Gaye, it coulda been the tea, but it was Aiden who’d suggested a move to the bedroom, and I could not get there fast enough.

But I took my time, gesturing him to lead the way.

He did.  I’ll leave it there.  You understand.

Jeanette, Chapter 29

It Was A Great Day, Part One

A couple of days passed by without anything significant happening; the tests at the lab were enlightening and confusing, aliens did not arrive to challenge my credibility as a scientist or try to date any appliances, Aiden and I spoke briefly on the phone as our schedules continued to suck.

But then, at 1:47 on Friday morning…

… Aiden called, asking me out.

Okay, okay… look.  I know it’s mumblesomethingoclock and I’m fast asleep after a long day making magic potions and rayguns, and I know he’s much younger and probably not thinking that people have schedules other than his own and that this might not be the most empathetic moment in our relationship so far, but when the man you’ve been trying to get together with calls you at 1:47 on a Friday morning asking you out for a date at the Chowder House, you say yes.

At the very least you try to say yes and hope that he understood your drowsy mumbling as affirmation.

He did, as he was waiting outside the restaurant when I arrived.

Man, it was good to see him again.  I was wide awake and eager for our first real date. We went in and asked for a table.

“Are you okay?” I asked. He looked like he was in pain.

“I’m … heh… Yeah, I’m okay. I just came here right after getting dressed and was so excited I … uh.. forgot to…”

I tried hiding a smile, but he saw it and smiled back.

The waitress showed us to our table, and Aiden all but ran off to the washroom.

“PLEASEGETMEABURGERANDABEERPlease!”

I ordered for the both of us. It was nearly 3AM, I had to be at work in 7 hours or so, and I was ordering a glass of wine, and a beer for Aiden.  This might take some getting used to.  I wonder if the lab would let me change my hours.

Aiden returned, and told me how great I looked, and how much he appreciated me coming out for dinner.

I reminded him that *he’s* wonderful, and that this is likely breakfast for me.

I think this has become my table.

We talked throughout the early morning, enjoying the meal and each other’s company.  Eventually, Aiden confessed that he had to get home to get some sleep.  There was a moment or two when it looked like one of us were going to make the hint of a suggestion that maybe …

… but it was 6 o’clock already, and I knew I had to get *some* sleep before work, or I’m likely to cause a serious explosion.  He paid the cheque, and we left.

Before I let him go though, I took a chance. We were getting on so well already, our hair’s about the same colour, and … length.  I even think our eyeglasses prescription is the same. I really wanted him in my life more, so – with Kimberly’s rejection still buzzing in the back of my head – I asked him to be my boyfriend.

Oh Aiden, please don’t leave me hanging here.

The poor guy was actually blushing!

“Y.. Yes!  Yes absolutely!”

I’m a responsible, hard-working adult with degrees in Astrophysics and Chemical and Biological Engineering, with a successful career as the “Pioneer of New Technologies” at one of the world’s leading research laboratories. But don’t think I didn’t “SQUEEEE!” like a 12 year old girl.

Aiden kissed me goodnight, and kissed him good morning in return. I was blissful and exhausted. I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face, but I could barely keep my legs moving.   Eventually I found my way home, but I don’t remember much of the trip.

Oh… obligatory new-boyfriend selfie!

Jeanette, Chapter 28

Get On With It!

And do you know what “getting on with my life” means, Aiden?  That’s right.  I’m coming after you.

Well, right after work.  Go to work, get paid, stalk Aiden.

It’s a valid plan.

Time to put said plan into motion. This is me being a responsible adult, and going after what I want.

Which – of course – starts with a glass of wine.  What I want is wine.

Following that, I began telling him what …

… okay, so other people want drinks, and that’s kind of his job. I don’t want to get him fired, after all.  Still, I can keep a conversation going when…

… Aiden, I just want you … I SAID I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT …

OH COME ON. Jeez people.

After a while it did start to slow down at the bar as folks returned to the dance floor.  The new girl at work … whatshername … Trisha? … dropped in and had a few drinks too.  She seems nice enough, if a bit of a partier.

Genevieve was asking about music or sports or something – something keeping my attention away from Aiden – when I spotted Trisha trying to chat up my guy.

Oh, no you don’t.  Your perky young ways are no match for my … er. Experience. I’m going to sit here all night, and wait for his shift to end. Eventually she gave up, conceding victory to my obvious captivating smile and bewitching conversation.

Or maybe when she got up to go to the bathroom I asked Aiden out and we left before she got back.

Either way, we skedaddled.

Holding hands, we walked across town to the disco. I figured we could get out to someplace he didn’t work at, even if it was another dance hall and bar.  I didn’t want to tell him that this place had better food.

It got late. We danced for quite a while, had a couple drinks, and some snacks.  And he just wasn’t … well, he just … wasn’t.  FINE.  Getting on with my life, right?

Take THAT.

Okay, that was actually pretty fantastic.

But, it was close to 2 in the morning by the time we kissed, and I had to work in a few hours.  We kissed again, and said our reluctant good-nights.

YEAH.

SUCK It, Trisha.

Jeanette, Chapter 26

Adulting Like an Adult

Dear diary. Today I woke up, went to work, and came home.

Okay, in the middle of that there was a fair bit of button pushing and serum making and attempting to contact aliens and – for the life of me – brainwashing people into changing their clothes. I’ll never understand that, but … <shrug> … it’s on the current list of tests to run.  I’ll continue doing stupid tests as long as they keep handing over the simoleons.

Because simoleons means …. renovations!

I absolutely love my new kitchen.

It looks all grown-up and stuff.

A real living room space that doesn’t look like the corner of a college dorm.

A larger bedroom as well, although I’ll admit that most of it is taken up with…

… my lab equipment.  Eh…, at least it’s out of the living room.

It’s starting to look like a real house.  I’m quite proud, and quite broke once it was all completed.

Still, I felt great.  I tried calling Aiden, to see what yesterday was all about, but he’d already started work.  It might be tricky making this work if he starts his job at the same time that I finish mine.

Well!  Only one thing to do then.

Let’s get this over with.

At least he didn’t run when he saw me come in.  I sat where he couldn’t ignore me, ordered wine, and asked him WHAT THE HELL.

It worked.  We had a good talk, and I feel loads better.  And … worse.

As it turns out, he was really looking forward to meeting me yesterday, wandering the park in the sunshine.  But, he’s also kind of shy, and apparently I make him nervous.  ME.  I make him nervous!

You know that moment when someone thinks you’re all successful and competent, a successful adult who’s apparently adulting like an adult, and you’re still trying to figure out where your arms go and how to cook something other than grilled cheese? It was certainly a hell of an eye opener for me.  I also discovered that I’m nearly 10 years older than him.

But what about yesterday?  Well, he explained that when he got near the park he thought I’d be alone.  Instead, I was surrounded by my girlfriends, laughing and having a great time, and he froze up.  He panicked, and spotting one of his friends’ kids, ran to the playground instead.

Jeez, I felt like a complete schmuck.

“Oh Aiden, I’m so sorry.  That hadn’t occurred to me at all.” He shrugged slightly.

“It’s okay…”

“No… no it’s not. I should have been actually thinking for once.  Please forgive me?  Give me another chance?”

“Give you another chance?  I was hoping you’d give me another chance!”

He smiled.  I smiled.  The woman at the end of the bar smiled.  We all agreed to give it another try.

Now I just have to wait until the weekend again.  Maybe I’ll need to find him a better job…

Jeanette, Chapter 25

The Girls, A Park, and Another Assumption

It’s hard to really call it “the next day” when we didn’t actually sleep. There were some brief naps, and I still had a serum that kept be going, but we all really needed to maybe stop drinking and get some food.  Jade suggested the cafe down the hill, Carla said she was starving, and Caitlyn sat up at the thought of coffee, so off we went.

Oh man, I need coffee.

I hadn’t really met Jade before, although I’d seen her several times at the club.  Caitlyn seemed to know her, but kept talking about how great Carla was.

I’ll admit, she was a hoot. I think she’s going to be a good friend. She’s quite funny too!

“I don’t know what you did, but I stepped on a duck!”

We lost it.  I think we were still a little drunk.

After a few hours wandering the park around the cafe, Caitlyn wanted to head over to the park where I’d run into her wife Teagan, and we both met Creepy Guy.  I didn’t see him this time.

I did spot Skyler out for a walk, looking… whoa!  That kid’s coming in fast.

Caitlyn barbequed up some vegetables, although I really could have used a burger. Apparently Teagan’s a vegetarian, and Caitlyn has … “adjusted”, she said.  I wondered briefly if there was any meat in the park I could catch with the stuff she’d cooked.

But it was a great day out with good friends.  I wondered what Aiden was doing on this sunny Sunday afternoon.

By the time I’d convinced myself to call him, Caitlyn wandered off to the bar, and a friend of Jade’s had shown up.  Lacie, I think she said.  I wasn’t paying too much attention.  Aiden said was just sitting around the house, and agreed to come down to the park!  I was really looking forward to this.

About 15 minutes later, he arrived.  Man, he cleans up well.  He wasn’t wearing those glasses last night, but … yum.  Kind of a sexy nerd thing going on.  I’m sure I can talk him out of that ponytail, but …

Hey… where’re you going, Aiden?

He headed straight down to the playground.  Seriously? I’M OVER HERE!

He spent the entire time down playing with the kids.  I don’t *think* any of them were his, it’s just … I don’t know. I guess it’s really nice that he likes kids that much, I just wanted him to spend some time with *me*.  It was heart-warming and -breaking at the same time.

Caitlyn came over to say goodbye for the day, and saw me watching Aiden.

“It’ll work out,” she said and hugged me.  I mumbled thanks, but I was thinking less charitable thoughts.

He didn’t even wave.  Or smile at me.

Hmph.

I went home, and napped.  Maybe I’ll see him again, maybe I’ll avoid him like a hot box of cobras and go live in a cave with that robot from work.

Hours later, I woke to the phone ringing. It was Carla, asking if I wanted to head out for dinner.  I agreed, thinking that a nice expensive dinner was what I needed right now.

After ordering and talking for a few minutes, I realised what was going on. Jeez I’m clueless sometimes.  Caitlyn had set us up.  I’ll have to have yet another talk with that woman.

I guess I’d really never talked with her about it, and only complained about Kimberley.  Oh, and Skylar.  Shit… Georgia.  Wow.  Okay, I see it now.

Carla must have noticed the stunned look in my eyes.  She smiled sadly.

“Let me guess; Caitlyn’s meddling when she should be listening.”

“I’m sorry…” I started.  She chuckled.

“No, that’s okay. I’m sorry for assuming.  She means well, and I guess she thought two of her friends would …”

“Finally be happy?”

“Have what she’s got?”

“Teagan is really hot.” She almost spat out her … whatever the hell she was eating.  But we were both laughing.

“To meddling but thoughtful friends.”

We talked well into the night, and I think got to know each other well.  We won’t be dating, but I’m sure we’ll be good friends.

At least, I hope so.  I’d hate to lose friends just because I won’t date them.  That would SUCK.

chapter 26 …

Jeanette, Chapter 24

Well Hello There

The next couple of days passed without aliens, jerks, or clam chowder.  It was uneventful and boring, if you ask me.  Maxwell wasn’t communicating with the microwave when I came into work Friday morning, but the microwave seemed happier than usual, beeping cheerfully away.  I frowned at it, but it didn’t seem to care.

I spent most of Saturday morning sleeping in, followed by some serious coffee-fueled computer gaming. Once the afternoon began to turn towards evening, I needed to head out, maybe see some friends and get some dancing in.

But first – of course – wine.

A good group of folk began arriving, but I knew better than to leave a nice glass of wine lonely.

The DJ was fantastic tonight. None of my usual friends showed up, but I had a good time with those who were here. I headed back to the bar for another drink, to find that there’d been a shift change during my workout on the dance floor.  And that’s when I met….

Aiden.

Sigh.  Oh… Aiden.

Aiden Stone is a smart and funny man.  We spoke and joked for about an hour, and got to know each other well.  Just then Sergio’s roommate (or brother? I never figured that out) Joaquin suggested a trip out to the Ruins, as he’d heard there was a huge party going down.

Of course there was. Didn’t this happen last week?  I should just start off at the ruins and save myself the time and cab fare.  But then I wouldn’t have met… oh.

I was torn.  Aiden had just started his shift, so he couldn’t leave. But I really wanted to dance, and there were other … “customers” or whatever demanding Aiden’s attention (the nerve of them!).  We traded phone numbers, I promised to call him, and I somewhat reluctantly headed out with the gang.

I’m glad I did. I’ll call Aiden, but I really needed to get out and jump with my friends.  Caitlyn was at the Ruins, and was I happy to see her.

I hadn’t noticed at first, but Sergio had come down as well. I think he was trying to get my attention, but I spent the night completely ignor…. I spent the night pretending to completely ignore him, while ensuring that he knew that I was doing so.  I’m certain it worked.

I’m having fun and you’re not involved, you jerk.

He went all “grr”-like at one point, but Caitlyn threatened him with a carefully raised eyebrow.

He eventually gave up.

Most of the original group had given up by that time as well. Caitrin was getting a second wind after a nap, and her friend Carla came down to join us.  Carla seemed like a good sort, and we got along well right away. I think she needed to get out for a fun night.

There was suddenly a strange light off on the horizon. Were the aliens coming out to dance? That would be fantas… oh, it’s the dawn.  We’d been up all night.
